Devlog 01: Surviving the cold

How temperature works in SHATTERED DIVIDE, why it is one of five survival stats, and what we learned building it.

Visual concept of a warm survival shelter among cold pine forests.
Visual concept for the website design. Game visuals are in development.

Survival games live or die on their stats. If they are too gentle, nothing feels dangerous. If they are too harsh, the game turns into a chore. In this first devlog we want to talk about one of the five stats you manage in SHATTERED DIVIDE: temperature.

Why temperature?

Hunger and thirst are about planning. Radiation and infection are about risk. Temperature is about place and time. Where you are and when you are there changes what you need, which makes the world itself part of the challenge.

A run that is easy at midday can be deadly after dark. A shortcut through high ground might save time but cost you heat. We want every trip out to feel like a set of small, interesting choices.

How it works

  • Your body temperature drifts towards the temperature around you.
  • Clothing, shelter and fire slow that drift down.
  • Being wet makes everything worse.
  • Getting too cold slows you down and drains stamina. Getting too hot makes you thirsty faster.

What is next

Next time we will talk about the corruption, and the rift events that bring it with them. If you want to hear about new devlogs as soon as they go live, join the mailing list.
